A recent study indicates that individuals who discontinue popular slimming jabs like Wegovy and Mounjaro can put back on shed pounds much more quickly than those who halt traditional diet and exercise programs.
Research printed in a leading health publication demonstrates that while obese people often shed about a fifth of their body weight while undergoing treatment, the mass is regained at an estimated rate of nearly a kilo each month upon discontinuation.
"Individuals buying these medications should be informed of the potential of quick weight regain when the medication ends," stated researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.
This pace of recovery means a reversion to original mass in about one and a half years.
Comparing Treatments
The analysis, which examined 37 of studies involving thousands of participants, compared the effects of the injectable medications with other pills.
Scientists note that individuals who lose weight through lifestyle changes alone generally see a more gradual weight regain—perhaps 100 grams monthly—after stopping.
Explaining the Rapid Regain
Doctors propose the mechanism of the drugs explains the accelerated regain.
GLP-1 drugs copy a body's own chemical called GLP-1, which helps regulate feelings of fullness.
"Sustained high doses of the hormone levels far above than the body's typical production might result in the system to generate a reduced amount of its own natural GLP-1, and may also diminish responsiveness to its actions," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition specialist.
"Stopping of this GLP-1 'fix' leads to hunger is uncontrolled, making overeating much more probable."
A Chronic Condition?
Health authorities recommend the injections for people with weight-linked medical conditions, alongside recommended diet and exercise modifications.
Professionals argue that, due to the high risk of relapse, the treatment should be considered life-long.
This opinion is reinforced by pharmaceutical companies, who say that the results "highlight the persistent character of obesity," comparing it to managing diseases like high blood pressure.
Patient Experiences
Individuals who have discontinued the medication describe a sudden resurgence of hunger.
"It was like a trigger activating and I was suddenly ravenous," said a patient.
The struggle is compounded if patients have not established permanent dietary or behavioural modifications during treatment.
Significant Adoption
Figures suggest that millions of adults in the UK have tried these injections in the past year, with demand being substantial.
- Adoption is higher among females compared to men.
- The middle-aged demographic shows the highest usage rates.
- A large proportion obtain the medications through private healthcare rather than the NHS.
Ultimately, researchers caution that while GLP-1 drugs are powerful agents for shedding pounds, they are not a standalone cure and maintained weight loss hinges on combined lifestyle management.
