Astronaut Discloses Emotional Distress In the Wake of ‘Tsunami of Online Abuse Following Journey
A pioneering space traveler has publicly detailed her struggle with mental health after facing a “tsunami of harassment” in the wake of a pioneering women-only spaceflight.
The 34-year-old activist – celebrated as a researcher and activist – was part of the short-duration mission in April, which also included celebrity crewmates.
The mission was heavily criticized by some, who questioned its cost and carbon footprint.
Reflecting on the ordeal, the astronaut, who made history as the pioneer for her community, stated the intense backlash buried her dreams under an “avalanche of misogyny”.
“I explained the depression could persist for a long time,” Ms. Nguyen stated in a social media post, referring to a phone call from a mission companion in the aftermath of the journey.
She characterized the press attention and digital reaction as an barrage beyond typical human coping.
“For a full week, I was bedridden and couldn't leave my Texas location,” she wrote. “A month later… I had to hang up… because I could not speak through my tears.”
Buried Under Misogyny
The researcher, who has dedicated her work to gynecological science and conducted tests during the mission, said every professional achievement – including her lab work and years of training to the historic significance of her heritage – was drowned out under the avalanche of misogyny.
She is best known for her groundbreaking advocacy championing the cause of victims of sexual violence.
Her own goal of reaching space was paused after being assaulted during her college days, leading to a years-long quest for justice.
Finding Solid Ground
Months following fulfilling her dream, she reports that the “fog of grief has started to lift”, and she expressed gratitude the well-wishers whose messages of encouragement helped save her. “You were my salvation,” she wrote.
She noted that amid the criticism, important benefits had emerged from the mission, including spotlight on her women's health research and new advocacy opportunities.
About the Mission
The fully automated spacecraft lifted off from its launch site in the spring, carrying the historic roster on a short trip that passed the Kármán line of space.
